There is SO much going on, so I'm going to get right to it. THIS weekend, March 10th & 11th I have two really amazing and interesting performances. The first one is Saturday night up in Saugerties, NY at the famous <a target="_new" href="http://johnstreetjam.net/">John Street Jam. My friends, this was booked almost 2 years ago and I'm very excited about it. Basically, there are two song circles with four artists in each round. We swap songs for an hour, take an intermission and then the next round starts. It's a really cool way to really hear the "song" in it's purest form.Sunday, March 11th I am participating in a very unusual show called <a target="_new" href="http://www.heartworks.com/musicals/artspace_musical/index.html">Artspace the Musical. This was the brainchild of the amazingly talented and creative folks at <a target="_new" href="http://www.heartworks.com/">Heartworks International. The premise of the show is a group of musicians (myself included) were given a choice of artworks that were submitted by local artists. We were then posed with the challenge of writing a song inspired by the piece of art we chose, so I will debuting my song "High On That Hill" inspired by piece #18 around 3:45pm. A VERY FRENCH CONNECTIONMY FIRST NYC SHOW IN OVER A YEAR!!! Ok, my tri-state friends asked for an NYC show, and now you'll receive! There are hints of Spring...and yes, that makes me happy!!! There is SO much going on, so I'm going to get right to it.

THIS weekend, March 10th & 11th I have two really amazing and interesting performances. The first one is Saturday night up in Saugerties, NY at the famous John Street Jam. My friends, this was booked almost 2 years ago and I'm very excited about it. Basically, there are two song circles with four artists in each round. For all my eastern LI friends, Sunday, February 12 I couldn't be more tickled than to be once again opening for the remarkable Vance Gilbert at University Cafe, right in my hometown of Stony Brook, NY.

The following evening, Monday, February 13th I'm driving up to Peekskill, NY to be the featured act at the Beanrunner Cafe as a special guest of my beautifully talented and clever friends The YaYas.

Rounding out a short month with lots of gigs, I'll be back on the island headlining at BACCA in Lindenhurst. My very special guest and friend from Australia, Kath Buckell will be opening the night.

My husband Gian and I were in New York for New Years Eve for the first time in over a decade and since we didn?t have a party to go to, I decided to create our own party?.on a webcast! All I can say is, wow, we did it! Together we traveled a year like no other and I remain completely humbled and grateful for the support, belief, enthusiasm and kindness so many of you have shown me.I considered doing sort of a "Year In Review" and overwhelmed myself. It was however, good for me to see how much progress was made, because in all honesty, the lack of sun this time of year sometimes has me questioning myself (the sun as well as the ever-popular carb fest that starts Thanksgiving weekend!). I forgive myself for small digressions and also feel really proud of the work that was done both personally and professionally. I credit so many of you for helping me to find that path once again, and to stay on it. I hope you know how much I appreciate every single one of you! CHECK OUT RECENT PERFORMANCES:November was an amazingly validating month:<a target="_new" href="http://lastlickscafe.org/">Last Licks was so filled with joy. Not only did I get to share the evening with my wonderful friend <a target="_new" href="http://www.barbarakessler.com/">Barbara Kessler, but so many friends from High School surprised us as well as my former Lucky 13 bandmate <a target="_new" href="http://www.cathykreger.com/">Cathy Kreger who sang on the last song with us (which sadly didn't get recorded because the battery died on the camcorder half way through the song before it ) We did get this new one at the top of the set for you: <a target="_new" href="http://youtu.be/UCyYKLq_3so"> The <a target="_new" href="http://www.breadboxfolk.org/">Bread Box was packed and I actually got to sing with the talented <a target="_new" href="http://hughblumenfeld.com/">Hugh Blumenfeld and his wonderful band. I really wanted to share this song because it is so special in that it was written as part of a songwriting challenge given at NERFA. Check it out: <a href="http://youtu.be/8_eFXH7tkRM" target="_new"> NERFA was exhausting and exhilarating as always and filled with moments that had a huge impact on me, like a three hour conversation with Marshal Rosenberg from <a href="http://www.buskinandbatteau.com/" target="_new">Buskin and Batteau Trio the morning after they hosted me. Dearest Lovely Listeners,
I decided to send this December newsletter later in the month to be closer to the holidays. All I can say is, wow, we did it! Together we traveled a year like no other and I remain completely humbled and grateful for the support, belief, enthusiasm and kindness so many of you have shown me.

I considered doing sort of a "Year In Review" and overwhelmed myself. It was however, good for me to see how much progress was made, because in all honesty, the lack of sun this time of year sometimes has me questioning myself (the sun as well as the ever-popular carb fest that starts Thanksgiving weekend!). I forgive myself for small digressions and also feel really proud of the work that was done both personally and professionally. I credit so many of you for helping me to find that path once again, and to stay on it. I hope you know how much I appreciate every single one of you!

November was an amazingly validating month:

Last Licks was so filled with joy. Not only did I get to share the evening with my wonderful friend Barbara Kessler, but so many friends from High School surprised us as well as my former Lucky 13 bandmate Cathy Kreger who sang on the last song with us (which sadly didn't get recorded because the battery died on the camcorder half way through the song before it

) We did get this new one at the top of the set for you:

The Bread Box was packed and I actually got to sing with the talented Hugh Blumenfeld and his wonderful band. I really wanted to share this song because it is so special in that it was written as part of a songwriting challenge given at NERFA. Check it out:

NERFA was exhausting and exhilarating as always and filled with moments that had a huge impact on me, like a three hour conversation with Marshal Rosenberg from Buskin and Batteau Trio the morning after they hosted me. This was recorded at 2am at NERFA:

To cap off the month, I was generously invited by Buskin and Batteau Trio to sit in with them at the Folk Society of Huntington. What an incredible honor:

Hello Lovely Listeners,

As I sit here writing, I am feeling incredible thankful for this crazy roller coaster of a year. I started out with so much trepidation about the future and now look back on a year filled with fabulous shows, grand accomplishments and most importantly-all of you! You all give me the inspiration and fire in my gut that encourages me to keep making this music and to keep sharing it, so thank you from the bottom, middle and top of my heart.

I will be heading up to Kerhonkson NY for my very first solo appearances at the 2011 NERFA Conference. If you're planning on going and would like to catch me, my schedule is below under calendar listings.

I have three shows rounding out November that I'm really excited about. First I'll be back at the Breadbox in Willimantic, CT on Saturday, 11/19 opening for the wonderful Hugh Blumenfeld! Next next day I will be performing at WHUD's Chocolate, Sweets & Holiday Treats up in New Windsor, NY.

THE CD:
This past weekend was spent with my friends Warner Cook, John Tabacco, Donna Heitner, Honor Finnegan and Gian DiMauro my hubby and engineer extraordinaire recording background vocals. The whole process got me so giddy, I found myself jumping and dancing around like a little kid. I guess when one is moved to such silliness, you know you're on the right track!

I've been a bit passive about my fundraising efforts for the CD. Honestly, I've never been comfortable asking for help of any kind and money makes me especially squirmy. Can you give me some feedback? It would be really helpful as I try to sort this all out.

Many of you know that in the previous home (which was a rental) we shared a recording studio which enabled all of us living there to not only record, but finely hone our music. I've been aching for that ability for six years now. It is really the only thing I miss about the old place (well, I miss my housemates, but we see each other and not living together is definitely better for friendship!). I have saved every penny I've made the last six years from all the soundtrack placements and my CD sales and now was the time. I have started keeping a video diary so you can all come along for the journey with us. Yesterday we had the new attic built. The attic will give us the much needed space to clear out the basement where the studio will live. I mean, that show last night was technically the “Last Lucky 13 Show, “ but you can’t erase a nearly three year journey that took all of us on the ride of a lifetime. Many equate being in a band to a marriage and now as I sit this morning in this quiet house, I have to agree. Last night for me, felt like the perfect end to a marriage that yielded many, many good things, but was inherently, perfectly flawed from the start-and I truly mean that it the best, possible way. I disclose this because the inevitable “But WHY are you splitting up?” keeps coming at us and aside from the tidy and neat answer of “it was time” or “the money wasn’t there to keep us going” it feels ok to be honest about it. I feel like when Susan left, it was a tumultuous divorce. The love was there but we all knew she couldn’t stay but no one wanted to say it. When Diane decided to leave, it was more like an annulment because we really didn’t have the time to grow deep roots with one another. So Cathy and I decided to forge forward, in retrospect mostly out of fear of “well, now what do I do with myself” and also that need to keep things moving forward for all of you who so graciously supported us through it all. Cathy and I remind me of that Donny and Marie song “I’m a little bit Country, I’m a little bit Rock & Roll.” We are both passionate performers that come from completely different musical perspectives. We both cared enough to put the work in to support one another, but the “glue” that you need to truly be a “band” was really never there-and we both knew it. Bands make music, they have creative breakthroughs, they fight, they cry, the break up, they get back together, but there is always glue that makes it feel like a band. We always felt like two friends who respected each other and sure liked having company on the journey, but that glue, it just wasn’t there, and that left us both feeling a bit frustrated. So rather than beat what was so good about us into the ground, we decided to let it go. It was the hardest, scariest decision, but ultimately, the right one. We are not angry with each other. There is no sense of competition, in fact, we’re sharing gig leads and even talked about maybe doing some work together in the future but “doing it differently this time.” So, the last night. There’s no need to bore you with details from the show. If you’ve seen us before, you know what we do…and I say humbly, we’re quite good at it too. What made last night perfect was the friends that drove as much as 3 hours to share our last night with us, the flowers we were given from the stage, the cake they baked us to celebrate (and yes, we cut it together ala bride and groom style! LOL!!). It was driving past Mamouns and collectively deciding to NOT go so Cathy could stay on her diet. Oh…and the opening band. I don’t even know how to put it into words. Let’s just say, they were a 6 piece acoustic surf band that included a 9 year old conga player who mostly looked bored. “Nuff said…it was perfect. The drive home, was like it always was, full of gabbing and reflection. The part that stirs me, is the goodbye. The complete roll reversal of Cathy standing strong and ME crying-that was a switch. Of course, 10 minutes into my ride home I got the following texts from Cathy “I really wish we had done the falafel” which made me burst out laughing ..and then “Now I’m crying too” which set me off into a flood once again. Our marriage is over and I am proud to say it is the healthiest, most loving supportive divorce I’ve ever witnessed. Today I sit here and write through a blurr of tears, knowing that as long as the sun keeps coming out, we will both be ok, and we sure have an arsenal of good stories to share with our friends! Truly, from the bottom, top and middle of my heart, thank you ALL for the ride, it was a really great one? There is something about saying the last show that sounds so final, and yet no one really believes it. I mean, that show last night was technically the “Last Lucky 13 Show, “ but you can’t erase a nearly three year journey that took all of us on the ride of a lifetime.

Many equate being in a band to a marriage and now as I sit this morning in this quiet house, I have to agree. Last night for me, felt like the perfect end to a marriage that yielded many, many good things, but was inherently, perfectly flawed from the start-and I truly mean that it the best, possible way. I disclose this because the inevitable “But WHY are you splitting up?” keeps coming at us and aside from the tidy and neat answer of “it was time” or “the money wasn’t there to keep us going” it feels ok to be honest about it.

I feel like when Susan left, it was a tumultuous divorce. The love was there but we all knew she couldn’t stay but no one wanted to say it. When Diane decided to leave, it was more like an annulment because we really didn’t have the time to grow deep roots with one another.
So Cathy and I decided to forge forward, in retrospect mostly out of fear of “well, now what do I do with myself” and also that need to keep things moving forward for all of you who so graciously supported us through it all.

Cathy and I remind me of that Donny and Marie song “I’m a little bit Country, I’m a little bit Rock & Roll.” We are both passionate performers that come from completely different musical perspectives. We both cared enough to put the work in to support one another, but the “glue” that you need to truly be a “band” was really never there-and we both knew it. We opened for James Maddock, who is just amazing. If you haven't seen him or heard him yet...RUN and do so. He is a consummate performer. Just gives so much and has the catchiest tunes to boot! His keyboardist Oli Rockberger is a killer player and a heck of a sweet guy. They were both so sad to hear about Lucky 13 disbanding, but both were so supportive and kind. It really helped. My hubby Gian came along and I have to say it really helped to have him there. He was able to keep the mood light for us both and it was really comforting me to know he was out there in the audience cheering us on. It was also so nice to see our friends like Annette, Gail and Arlon who came out to support us. So, now we have one final show and that's it. I feel such a range of emotions. I'm excited about what's to come...I ordered the computer for my new studio and it's coming tomorrow. One small step towards the recording studio I've been promising myself for over six years now. I'll keep you all posted....and hope you'll continue to come along for the ride! XO, MG

I sit here pondering how I will reinvent myself yet again...and no, I don't feel like Madonna...at all.  There is a certain amount of remorse, but moreso a feeling of quiet in my brain for the first time in a very long time. I am excited about what this brand new shiny year has in store for me. Stay tuned...I look forward to sharing lots of thoughts with you in the days to come!
